First Lt. Harry Marlin Godwin, 27, son of Mrs. Louise Godwin, 417 Louise St., was killed in action in Viet Nam Friday, suffering a gunshot wound of the head. A telegram was delivered to Mrs. Godwin Saturday from the Department of the Army, explaining that Lt. Godwin was on a combat operation when struck by hostile small arms fire. Godwin, a military career man, had only four more months of service remaining. The telegram stated that a representative of the Commanding Genral of the Fourth U. S. Army will personally contact Mrs. Godwin. Chief of Support Services, Department of the Army, is to communicate with the family concerning the return of the body. Godwin was connected with Co. A, First Battalion, 327th Infantry, which is part of the 101st Airborn Division. He graduated in 1957 from Hermitage High School and from Henderson State Teachers College in 1964, with a BS degree in physical education. While in the service, he had been both a pilot and a parachute jumper. He had been in Viet Nam since July 9. Other than his mother, Lt. Godwin is survived by: three brothers, William P. Godwin of El Centro, Calif.; Hendrix Godwin of Pine Bluff, and Carroll Godwin who attends Henderson College, six nieces and four nephews. (El Dorado Times - March 7, 1966)
