Thomas Bryce Griffin, 78, of 800 Euclid St., died Friday afternoon in a local hospital following a brief illness. He was born Jan. 31, 1889, in Wingate, N. C. and was the son of Thomas Bryce and Alief Gaddy Griffin. He had been a resident of Union County for 68 years and was owner and president of Griffin Auto Co. at the time of his death. He was a member of the Old Union Baptist Church, a member of the Rialto Men's Bible Class and a member of the Old Times Auto Club, and the El Dorado Riding Club. In 1912 he bought a livery stable on S. Washington Avenue which he managed until 1915 at which time he made his first venture into the automobile business by buying the Ford agency in 1926, he built the building on the corner of Locust Street and Jefferson Avenue where he bought the Buick franchise. He remained in that building after securing the Chevrolet agency in 1931 until Jan., 1963, when Griffin Auto Co. was moved to its present location at Hillsboro Street and S. West Avenue. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Carol King Griffin; one daughter, Mrs. Jimmy Mitcham, El Dorado; one step-son, J. C. Pendleton, El Dorado; one grandson, four granddaughters, three great-grandsons, one great-granddaughter, one brother, Carl Griffin, El Dorado; and one sister, Mrs. DeWitt Hatch, El Dorado. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Union Baptist Church with Dr. Don B. Horton and the Rev. Gary M. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery under the direction of Young's. Pallbearers will be Julius Miller, Joe Works, Doyne Gaddy, R. L. Summers, Curtis Long and Herman Gaddy.
