Crash Kills Assistant Principal
Garland "Gary" Hampton, 44, an assistant principal at Fayetteville High School, was killed Sunday afternoon when his car veered off U.S. 71 in Fayetteville and slammed into a concrete bridge abutment at the Arkansas 112 overpass.
Hampton was driving north on the expressway when the car, a 1982 Mazda compact, left the road about 4:40 p.m. and slammed head-on into the abutment, according to the Arkansas State Police.
Hampton, of 1608 Briarcliff in Fayetteville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The State Police said there were no skid marks and there was no apparent explanation for why the car veered from the highway. There was no evidence of alcohol at the scene. State Police said Hampton's body would be sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
Shortly before the accident, Hampton had coached Butterfield Trail Elementary School's sixth-grade girls basketball team to a win in a Fayetteville Youth Center tournament. He apparently had been driving home afterward when the wreck occurred.
