James W. Roach, age 86 of Yellville, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2008 at the Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home. He was a son of the late James & Ellie (Tatom) Roach and was born on December 18, 1921 in Greenwood, Arkansas. James spent 5 1/2 years serving in the U.S. Army after volunteering on his 18th birthday in 1939. He was a recipient of three Bronze Service Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. In June of 1945, he was the first Arkansas soldier to be honorably discharged based on the point system. After leaving the service, he married Augusta Keeter on August 10, 1946. His professional career included working in the oil fields, being a ranch hand in Nebraska, driving an ice truck and helping to build the Bull Shoals Dam as a dump truck driver. He later was a school bus driver for the Yellville-Summit School district for 12 years. James was a charter member of the V.F.W. in Flippin as well as the D.A.V. in Yellville. He was a longtime member of the Broadway Church of Christ in Yellville.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Augusta; his three sons, James and wife Mary of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Johnny and his wife Regina of Harrison, and Joe and his wife Ruth of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Helen Joiner of Eagle Town, Oklahoma and Thelma Mangrum of El Paso, Texas; five grandsons and one granddaughter and 13 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Visitation will be on Friday, January 18 between 6-8 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Burns Funeral Home Chapel with Gerald Davenport officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Yellville. Memorials can be made to charity of choice.

Pallbearers will be James Roach, Johnny Roach, Joe Roach, Paul Roach, Dane Hudson, Stan Rudzewicz, and Larry Blasdel. Honorary pallbearers are Hugh Brightwell, Dwight Shipman, Jim Epling, Doyle Davenport, Ronnie Davenport, Bill Davenport and Kirby Davenport.
