FAYETTEVILLE — David Eugene Lashley of Fayetteville died Aug. 31, 2008, at the age of 76 after battling cancer for three years.

A Fayetteville native, David was born June 2, 1932, to S.D. and Helen Hansard Lashley. He attended Washington Elementary School before graduating from FHS in 1950. In high school, he was school and state student council president, National Honor Society member, band member, and three-sport letterman, team captain in two, and all-state and all-American in football. David went on to be an outstanding student and three-year football letterman at the University of Arkansas, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity, Theta Tau Engineering fraternity, ROTC and coached freshman football as a graduate assistant before graduating in Industrial Engineering in 1955.

After graduation, he was commissioned as second lieutenant in the U.S. Corps of Engineers. After two years active duty, he began a career as an engineer in the petroleum industry, when the death of his father in 1963 brought him back to Fayetteville where he took over his father's accounting practice.

Although he worked tirelessly in his professional life, David's first love was his family. He was a dedicated husband and father, and dearly loved his grandchildren, attending innumerable events in which they participated.

David provided endless volunteer hours to many local organizations. He was the epitome of charitable service, gaining the trust and admiration of his entire community for his reliable, tireless, and unending contributions to his community. An incomplete list includes more than quarter century of youth coaching in football, softball and basketball, 36 years of school booster clubs, over 30 years service as an officer and director of the DWR Boys and Girls Club (formerly the Fayetteville Youth Center), a founding board member and officer of Butterfield Trail Village, Presbyterian Church Elder and Trustee, board member of the Fayetteville Community Foundation, more than 20 years service as board member and chair of the Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department, 37 years an active Lions club member, and service as officer of the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation.

Some of his awards include the first recipient of the Betty Lighton Service Award, recipient of the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation Hall of Honor (2001), Outstanding Service awards from Lions, Civitans, Jaycees and Exchange Clubs, and the National Boys Club Medallion. A city park was recently named in his honor by the Fayetteville Parks and Recreation Department. He was awarded the FHS Booster Club "Sixth Man" award, board room dedication at Butterfield Trail Village and most recently the Association of Professional Fundraisers honored him with their Lifetime achievement award for volunteerism.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lanell Allen Lashley and five daughters, Lisa Higgins (Howard), Rene' Ellis (Joe), Shelley Ellis (Kelly), Dana Daniels (Shawn), and Adrienne Taylor (Donnie). Also, survived by eight grandchildren, Hannah Higgins; Brooks and Andrew Ellis; Shelby, Bailey, and Laney Daniels; and Luke and Avery Taylor; his sister, Lorita Lashley Simmons and cousin, Frank Scott.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at First United Presbyterian Church, 695 Calvin St., Fayetteville with private burial.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at First United Presbyterian Church.
