John Ford Smith Jr., age 66, died at his home in Newport on June 6, 2011. He was born on October 27, 1944 in Memphis, the son of the late J. Ford Smith and Katherine Lanier Smith of Augusta. He attended school in Augusta and graduated form Columbia Military Academy and from Louisiana Tech University. For many years he worked as a chemical engineer for AMOCO Oil Company in Galveston, Texas, retiring in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Montague Nance Smith of the home, a sister, Katherine S. Corcoran of Little Rock. He is survived by two children, Scott Nance and Amanda Reynolds and husband Ben, all of Newport. He also adored his two grandchildren, Christopher Reynolds and Luke Michael Reynolds, whose PawPaw was always there to throw a ball or provide a popsicle. He leaves a nephew, John C. Corcoran of Memphis, and niece, Katherine M. Cocoran of Little Rock. John also leaves behind loved ones that he cherished from his many years in Texas.
Since moving back to Arkansas in 2003, John has truly made himself a member of the community, attending events and becoming friends with as many people as possible. He loved attending the grandsons' ball games, and local football games. He was a loyal member of the First United Methodist Church of Newport and has served on the Board of Trustees, as well as chair of the Trustees, and helped with backpack, grounds, and other ministries. He loved being an usher, and greeting everyone on Sunday morning. John was an expert and avid bridge player. He enjoyed the game, and studied it each day of his life. He loved good food, good company, and good music.
Visitation will be at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home, Wednesday, June 8, 6-8 p.m. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 9, at the First United Methodist Church of Newport. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 217 Laurel Street, Newport, Ark. 72112 Arrangements by Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.
