Sloan Gustavus "Gus" Turnbow, 93, of Lynn, died April 19, 2008, at Skill Care Nursing Home in Jonesboro.

The son of Charles and Pearl Rudy Turnbow, he was a graduate of Sloan-Hendrix Academy in Imboden. He served as a sergeant in the Army during World War II. He was a ginner in the 1930s and was the owner of a service station and cafe in Lynn for many years. He worked at Colson in his later years.

He served on the Lynn City Council from 1990 until 2000. He was a member of the Lynn American Legion Post and assisted the Lawrence County Election Commission for several years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Marie Brannon Turnbow; and a great-grandchild.

Survivors include a son, Sloan G. Turnbow Jr. and wife Ann, Jonesboro; a sister, Ina Lee Lewis, Batesville; a brother, Charles Wayne Turnbow, Livonia, Mich.; four grandchildren, Tim Turnbow, and Dr. Valerie Sloan and husband Dr. Tony Sloan, all of Jonesboro, Lance Turnbow, Esq. and wife Kim, New Braunfels, Texas, and Dr. Lauren Turnbow, Little Rock.; and two great-grandchildren, Jack Sloan and Olivia Sloan.

Funeral is today at 1 p.m. in the Methodist Church at Lynn with Dr. Gary Winters officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Dry Creek Cemetery at Lynn under the direction of House-Gregg Funeral Home of Lynn.

Pallbearers will be Roger Clayton, Randy Glenn, Larry Vance, Mitchell Little, Steve Turner and Van Deeter.
