Husband of Elizabeth Ann Rennick McGee
William L. McGee was born in Jefferson County Missouri, the son of Samuel McGee (1813-1891) and Elizabeth Thompson (1816-1855). He married Elizabeth Ann Rennick (1845-1874) at Franklin Court House, Washington, Missouri in 1868. Upon Elizabeth's death in 1874, he married her cousin Clara Ellen Rennick.
In the Civil War William L. McGee served first on the Union side and later on the Confederate side during the Civil War.
William enlisted at age 18 in 1863 and served as a Private in Company H, 30th Regiment Missouri Infantry (Union). Upon witnessing atrocities committed by Pro Union "Missouri Red Legs" he deserted and joined the 1st Northeast Regiment, Missouri Cavalry, Confederate Army and then Company H, 19th Arkansas Infantry, Confederate Army for the duration of the War.
His older brothers, Samuel and James served as Privates in Company B & C, 6th Missouri Infantry (Union). James McGee died of wounds received at the siege of Vicksburg.
