Black Rock- Arbie Grant Bates, 86 passed from this life Friday at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. He was born May 20, 1927 in Black Rock to George A. and Bessie Propst Bates and had lived most of his life in Lawrence and Craighead County. He was owner of Bates Flying Service and was a retired crop duster. He was also a Journeyman Electrician and an IBEW union member. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Black Rock and a United States Navy Veteran having served in War World II. He was of the Baptist belief.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George Bates Jr. and sisters, Mona Lou Collins and Margie Smith.
He is survived by Barbara Bates, mother of their two daughters, Pam Martin of Jonesboro, Sheila Ann Williams and husband Ronnie of Greers Ferry; brother, Frank Bates of Cherokee Village; sister, Mary Boyd of St. Peters, Missouri; 6 grandchildren, Shawn Grant Williams, Andy Martin and wife Jessika, Barry Martin, retired Lieutenant Commander, Rick Williams and wife Julia, Rhonda Eimer and husband Robert, First Sergeant Phillip Williams and wife Janet; 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m at House-Gregg Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge with the funeral service immediately following visitation at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Oak Forest Cemetery in Black Rock.
Serving as Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and special friend, Rob Colbert.
Honorary Pallbearers will be all of his crop dusting buddies and members of the Masonic Lodge in Black Rock.
