W. L. was born June 28, 1916 to Marvin E. Tate, Sr. and Mary Lieu Merrick Tate in Conway County, Arkansas, and spent his youth in Washington, Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 51 years Virginia Stewart Tate and his wife of 17 years Margaret Gunter Beyerley Tate and a brother, James O. Tate.
Survivors include his son, Jim Tate and Suellen of Hope, Arkansas, grandsons Stewart Tate and Natalie of Bentonville, Arkansas, Neal Tate and Amy of Searcy, Arkansas, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Marvin E. Tate, Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky, and a sister, Nina Jean Tate of Hope.
He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Hope where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He also served on the Hope City Board of Directors, President of the Chamber of Commerce, and President and Charter Member of the Hope Lions Club. He was also a member of the Golden Kiwanis Club and a life member of the Whitfield Masonic Lodge.
Early in his career W.L. served as an Officer and Chief of the Hope Police Department. He had a long career in sales at Hope Auto Company and later was owner/operator of Tate Auto Company.
Visitation for W. L. Tate will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 4th at Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home in Hope.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 5th at the Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mark Fischer and Ed Claybrook officiating.
Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery under the direction of Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home.
The family extends their appreciation to the staff of Heather Manor for their care and compassion during his last years. Because the church was so important in his life, memorials are requested to First Baptist Church, 300 S. Main, Hope, AR 71801.
